The popular UK National Lottery operated by Camelot has been running since 1994 and is a big favorite nationwide. It has bore no competition until the advent of the Health Lottery. The Health Lottery is fairly new in such business as it started in October 2011 and is operated by Northern and Shell.
There has been a wave of protest against the Health Lottery saying that its business was taking income away from proceeds normally gained by the National Lottery. The National Lottery is known to contribute a big percentage of its revenue to charities.
In view of a report on the matter, Tory MP Therese Coffey questioned Jenny Williams, the Gambling Commission Chief Executive Officer on the reasons as to why the Health Lottery had been issued 51 licenses. This is made up of one license for each company which operates society lotteries that constitute the Health Lottery. And this too even when each community interest company is registered at the same place and with the same three directors.
The minister for Tourism and Heritage, John Penrose, who watches over gambling matters in the UK, said that the Health Lottery brought novelty in this sector which perhaps gave food for thought to other society lotteries that they could pick up some of Health Lottery’s ideas. Penrose added that there should be hard facts against the Health lottery before accusing them of anything.
Penrose wants to bring changes to the current UK online gambling legislation. But due to the time factor, he may not be able to address this agenda in the next parliament sessions. Penrose knows that the discussion on the reform will create quite an uproar. The delay in dealing with the change in legislation might take till 2014.
Penrose is perhaps too hopeful in thinking that he will have his voice heard by latest 2014.
